The Erthen Isles are remembered throughout Mernia as the place “where liberty breathed its first breath.” Forged beneath relentless heat and tempered by centuries of hardship, the Erthens have produced some of the greatest warriors and tacticians the Known World has ever seen. Yet to define them solely by war would be a grave injustice, for the Isles possess a richness of culture and craft equal to their martial reputation.

The often-lush highlands of the Erthen Isles yield an extraordinary abundance of fruit, flowers, spices, and medicinal herbs. Agriculture is regarded not merely as labour, but as an art worthy of pride and reverence. Erthen cuisine, famed across Mernia, reflects this same intensity of spirit. Rich in spice and overwhelming flavour, their dishes are often considered unbearable by foreign tongues, leading many outsiders to joke that the Erthens themselves must be immune to heat.

Having sampled their cooking personally, I can attest to the truth behind such claims. The fire lingered in my throat long after the meal had ended, and the consequences upon my stomach the following morning were equally memorable—though perhaps best left undescribed. But I digress.
