Most are consumed instead by the relentless heat, the chaos of its crowded cities, and the endless rivalries and ambitions of its people. Yet beyond the walls of Karth’s great urban centres lies a land capable of inspiring wonder and dread in equal measure.

Across the wider realm stretch landscapes both breathtaking and unforgiving—sun-scorched canyons, hidden valleys, subterranean settlements, and ancient ruins swallowed slowly by dust and stone. Those willing to journey beyond the trade roads often discover that the true soul of Karth lies far from its marketplaces and political theatres.

In the far north-east dwell the wealthiest and most influential dynasties in all of Mernia. The climate there is gentler, the hills greener, and the cities wealthier than elsewhere in the Free States. It is within these prosperous northern lands that Karth’s greatest centres of learning were established.

Foremost among them stands the renowned Guilds Academy, regarded as the most prestigious institution of craft, philosophy, innovation, and scholarship in the known Mernic world. At its heart lies the legendary Guild of Guilds, an extraordinary complex dedicated to the mastery of every recognised art and discipline. Scholars often describe it as less a single academy and more a living monument to human achievement and intellect.

Nearby stands the equally revered Bardlocks Academy, famed throughout Mernia for its teachings in history, language, diplomacy, music, and the preservation of ancient lore. Together, these institutions have transformed northern Karth into one of the greatest intellectual centres of the Known World.

Further south along the warm eastern coastline rests the ancient city of Barden. Though less lavish than the Guild of Guilds, Barden carries even greater historical significance, for it is widely considered the original birthplace of organised Mernic scholarship. Its very name has become synonymous with wisdom and learning across countless realms.

Only the sacred Ardulaem of Marcia is said to rival the immense collections of texts, relics, and preserved artefacts housed within Karth’s academies. Within their vaults lie histories forgotten elsewhere, fragments of dead languages, records of vanished kingdoms, and knowledge many believe should never have survived the passage of time.
