The Basket Lizards, known formally as Mernic Hermit Lizards, are small reptiles commonly found throughout the southern realms of Marcia and Mernia. Harmless and remarkably docile, they have long lived alongside rural communities and are among the most familiar creatures of the region.

They are famously easy to catch. A simple woven basket left overnight in a patch of dense vegetation will often be occupied by morning, the lizard having crawled inside in search of shelter. Once settled, a Basket Lizard forms an unusually strong attachment to its chosen basket, treating it almost as a shell or burrow. If threatened, it will hiss, thrash, and stubbornly defend its home despite its otherwise timid nature.

Among the Zaureez, these creatures are especially beloved as household pets, particularly by children, who often decorate the baskets with ribbons, dyes, and painted symbols. Some families even pass particularly old or well-tempered lizards down through generations, regarding them as quiet companions and signs of domestic good fortune.

Though small and unassuming, the Basket Lizards have become enduring symbols of comfort, familiarity, and home throughout the southern kingdoms.
