The Blaegos are majestic predators native to the wild lands of Zauri, though the southern Kingdom of Mernia is far from the only realm in which they are found. For centuries they have been kept by Mersyffian kings and their estranged pirate kin, prized as symbols of strength, prestige, and dominion over the untamed south. So widespread has this practice become that entire prides now roam freely across the Pyreez Southlands, thriving far beyond their ancestral homeland.
In the wild, Blaegos possess a social structure unusual among great hunters. The males are known to remain behind to guard cubs and territory, while the females lead the hunt, using their speed and agility to stalk prey through dense jungles and treacherous swamplands. Their silence and coordination have earned them fearful reputations among travellers, many of whom never realise a pride is near until it is far too late.
Among both the Zaureez and the Mersyffians, it is said that the beasts may be pacified with ghi root, a narcotic plant commonly smoked by humans. Male Blaegos in particular are known to consume the root eagerly, after which they often collapse into hours-long stupors, sprawled lazily beneath trees or along riverbanks. Some rulers are even said to keep entire gardens of ghi solely for the purpose of calming their prized beasts.
Despite their fearsome reputation, the Blaegos remain deeply woven into the culture and identity of the southern realms—revered as creatures of power, wilderness, and royal prestige.
