Though Nelso is credited with the discovery of the Pale Isle, the remaining islands of the Paw Islands were later charted during Ifverdian’s northern expedition towards the distant and little-understood Farther Seas. Unlike the Pale Isle itself, the surrounding islands appear free of the strange hairless mutes that first terrified Nelso’s sailors.
These silent, human-like beings are found nowhere beyond the Pale Isle. Several captains—including Ifverdian himself—noted that the creatures possess a peculiar aversion to the sea, rarely venturing beyond the dense inland jungles. Even during daylight, those jungles remain shrouded in perpetual twilight beneath immense canopies and unbroken cloud. Sailors often claimed that sunlight itself seemed unable to reach the forest floor.
Despite their eerie reputation, the Paw Islands are rich in unusual wildlife. Wild boars roam the undergrowth in great numbers, while strange creatures known as ebbihs inhabit the jungles. Most famous of all are the islands’ two-headed parrots, whose paired voices are said to sing haunting harmonies through the humid grey air, especially at dusk and before storms.
The islands are also known for their abundance of pink-skinned bananas called bajajings, regarded by travellers as the sweetest fruit in the known world. Many sailors who survived the journey north claimed the taste alone was worth the terror of the voyage.
Yet for all their beauty and abundance, the Paw Islands remain places of unease and mystery—lands where the jungle watches silently, and where even the wind seems reluctant to linger.
